The Kathmandu Kora Ultra 140k Challenge

The Kathmandu Kora Ultra 140k Challenge

This year, after 14 editions of the Kora Cycling Challenge, a new route has been added to appeal to a new breed of ultra riders who find the 100k challenge too easy. We are introducing the Ultra 140k, which will be a seriously tough challenge with a close to 4000m altitude gain.

The Concept:
The Kathmandu Valley Rim (KVR) is a trail developed by trail runners and is a grueling 165km, with a close to 10500m altitude gain. The organizers have partnered with TrailMandu (www.trailmandu.com) and the developers of the Manujushree Trail Run to include a trail worthy of inclusion in the already established 6 Kora trails in the valley, such as Kathmandu 50, 75 and 100, and the Bhaktapur 50, 75 and 100.

The Trail:
The trail starts in Patan Durbar Square and covers several locations before coming back to Patan Durbar Square, completing the grueling 140k. This year, there will be no markings along the trail, and riders will need to follow a GPS route. The trail files are available on the KORA Challenge app (by Kazi Studios) for Android and will also be available on the Baato App. Riders can download the GPX file and put it on their device or ride app of their choice.

How Will It Work?
This is a fully self-supported challenge. Riders need to be confident and familiar with the trails in the valley or ride in a small team. Registration is required, and it covers insurance. Riders must choose Kathmandu and other, and type in 140 for the distance. Riders are strongly advised not to attempt this ultra challenge if they are not experienced. It is emphasized that the ride is self-supported.

Precautions on This Trail:
Riders need to be physically prepared and ready to give up should they find the challenge too much. The Kora is a circuit, so riders can stop anywhere and return to the city at any time. It is essential to carry enough snacks, hydration, and repair kits as the ride is not supported, except for organizers keeping track of the participants.
